Readings for the Camino Português — a Psalm for Every Stage

Short answer: you don't need to carry a Bible up the Alto da Portela Grande. This page gives you one short reading for each stage of the Camino Português from Porto — the pilgrim's blessing, the psalms pilgrims have walked with for a thousand years, and the road to Emmaus for your final day into Santiago. All texts are public domain (KJV). Print it, save it offline, or read each morning over coffee.

The Camino is many things — a trail, a holiday, a reset. For many walkers it is also a pilgrimage in the oldest sense. Whether you walk for faith or simply with an open mind, these are the passages that fit the road: short enough to hold in your head for 20 km, old enough to have been said by pilgrims on this same path for centuries.

The Pilgrim's Blessing

May the Lord direct your steps with his favour, and be your companion on the way. May the road rise to meet you, may the sun warm your face, and may you arrive whole at the house of the Apostle. Go in peace, pilgrim — buen camino.

Traditional blessing given to pilgrims (Roncesvalles / Codex Calixtinus tradition). In Portuguese: Que o Senhor dirija os teus passos com o seu favor e seja o teu companheiro no caminho. Que a estrada se abra à tua frente, que o sol te aqueça o rosto, e que chegues inteiro à casa do Apóstolo. Vai em paz, peregrino — bom caminho.

Psalm 84:5 · The pilgrim heart

Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them.

Day 1 — Porto → Vilarinho

Matthew 7:7-8 · Setting out

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Day 2 — Vilarinho → Barcelos

Matthew 6:26, 33-34 · Travel light, worry less

Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow.

Day 3 — Barcelos → Ponte de Lima

Psalm 23:1-4 · The shepherd's road

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Day 4 — Ponte de Lima → Rubiães (Alto da Portela Grande)

Psalm 121:1-3, 8 · Lift your eyes to the hills

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Day 5 — Rubiães → Tui (crossing into Spain)

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Day 6 — Tui → O Porriño

Matthew 11:28-30 · For the tired

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Day 7 — O Porriño → Redondela

James 1:2-4 · Perseverance — from Santiago's own letter

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Day 8 — Redondela → Pontevedra

Psalm 27:1 · No fear on the road

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Day 9 — Pontevedra → Caldas de Reis

Philippians 4:6-7, 13 · Peace over worry

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Day 10 — Caldas de Reis → Padrón

Mark 6:8-9 · Take nothing but a staff — where the Apostle's boat landed

And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

Day 11 — Padrón → Santiago de Compostela

Luke 24:15, 32 · The companion on the road

And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way?

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. — Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
