When to Walk the Camino Português: Month by Month
Timing changes the Camino completely. The same route is a joy in May and a sweat-soaked endurance test in August. Here's the honest month-by-month so you walk in the weather you actually want.
Spring (April–June) — the sweet spot
For most people, this is the best time.
- Weather: warm but not punishing, green countryside, wildflowers.
- Crowds: building but not overwhelming.
- Watch for: April can still be wet (pack the rain jacket regardless of month).
- Best overall: May — warm days, long light, everything open, the trail at its prettiest.
Summer (July–August) — beautiful but hot
- Weather: hot, often 30°C+ inland. The Central route's exposed stretches are tough; the Coastal route's sea breeze is a real relief.
- Crowds: peak. More pilgrims, fuller albergues, busier towns.
- Honest advice: start walking at dawn, finish by early afternoon, hydrate hard. If you're heat-sensitive, walk the Coastal route or pick a different season.
Autumn (September–October) — the quiet favourite
Many seasoned walkers' top pick.
- Weather: warm, settled, softening light. September especially is gorgeous.
- Crowds: thinning after the summer peak — more space, more solitude.
- Watch for: October brings shorter days and the first real rain.
Winter (November–March) — for the solitude seekers
- Weather: cool to cold, wet, short daylight.
- Crowds: almost none — you may walk for hours alone.
- The catch: many albergues, cafés and services close in winter, so planning matters far more, and stretches can feel bleak.
- Suits: experienced walkers who want solitude and don't mind the rain and logistics.
The quick decision
- Best all-round: May or September — warm, walkable, open, not packed.
- Only have summer? Walk Coastal, start early, accept the heat.
- Want solitude and don't mind rain? Autumn into winter.
- First long walk? Late spring — kind weather while your body adapts.
Whatever month you pick
Two things stay true year-round: bring a proper rain jacket (the Atlantic side is unpredictable any month), and book your beds ahead in peak season (May–September) — arriving in a full town with sore feet at 5pm is the fastest way to ruin a good day's walk.
